Compared to previous generations, we now travel further, faster and more frequently than ever before. Many of the products we buy in shops are importedfrom countries like China and arrive here on container ships. The largest ships carry up to 18,000 containers!
There are many ways that we travel around a town, a country or the world. A car, bus, train, bike or foot are all different modes of transport. The most common mode of transport that we use is probably the car. It is not unusual for a family to own two or even three cars.
Each mode of transport have advantages and disadvantages. There are several advantages and disadvantages of travelling by car.
Pollution
Road transport accounts for 22 per cent of total UK emissions of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to climate change.
Noise from road traffic affects 30 per cent of people in the UK. Sources include engine noise, tyre noise, car horns, car stereos, door slamming, and squeaking brakes.
Losing the Countryside
Roughly 2 per cent of Britain's land is covered by roads.
In total, local governments plan to spend £710 million from 2015 on new road capacity for cars and lorries.
Congestion
New roads make journeys quicker in the short term, so people drive more often and even move farther from work where houses are cheaper.
A major study looking into the impact of the Newbury bypass showed that traffic levels predicted for 2010 in Newbury were already reached in 2003 - and that traffic had increased by almost 50 per cent in that period, leading to congestion on a new road!
There are several ways in which congestion can be reduced:
bypasses can be built around heavily congested towns or cities, but this involves building roads over open countryside.
Applying heavy charges for car owners to park in these settlements may reduce congestion, but may also reduce the number of peopl visiting the settlement and using its business.
Introduce a Congestion Charge Zone, such as the one introduced in London in 2003.
Roads are just one possible routeway and cars are just one form of transport. Here are some alternatives:
