The exam paper will either ask you to give the grid reference of a feature on the map or it will ask you to find the feature at a particular grid reference.Â
If the symbol has a stick or arrow attached to it, you must take the reference from the tip of the stick or arrow.
You may be asked for a four-figure grid reference or a six-figure grid reference.
A four-figure grid reference refers to a whole square.
A six-figure grid reference refers to an exact point within the square.
Always remember to look along the eastings first (along the bottom or top) and then up and down the northings (sides). The phrase to remember is 'along the corridor and up the stairs'.
